Who is behind Te Taitokerau Can?
Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council, Whangārei District Council, and Kaipara District Council created Te Taitokerau Can to promote the work of building a climate-resilient future. We showcase the work councils are doing and how iwi and hapū, community groups, businesses, schools, households and individuals are building a thriving tomorrow.
Our goal is to build trust and confidence in how people in our region are working together to lessen the impacts of climate change, adapt, and create climate-resilient communities into the future.
Building a resilient future together
Climate Adaptation Te Taitokerau (CATT)
Our climate is changing. More frequent flooding, droughts and coastal erosion are already a reality, posing serious risks to biodiversity and ecosystems, roading access and water resilience. Te Taitokerau needs to adapt, to keep our environment, people and economy strong.
Climate Adaptation Te Tai Tokerau (CATT) is a partnership between all four Te Taitokerau councils and tangata whenua representatives. Since 2019, we’ve been working together to develop an adaptation plan that will protect our people, places and cultural identity.
Regional strategy
The Te Tai Tokerau Climate Adaptation Strategy was adopted by councils and tangata whenua representatives in April 2022. Currently we’re developing an identity for the CATT rōpū, through a collaborative process with our Tiriti partners and communities. A big step in working together as a region was for councils to agree on a strategy to guide our mahi and how we work together.
Partners
There’s a lot of work to do, and much of it is done by communities. Where possible councils are partnering with iwi and hapū groups, other agencies and community leaders to advance a shared vision for a more climate-resilient Te Taitokerau.
