Can you lose some carbon weight?
The brainchild of Auckland Council and Wellington City Council, FutureFit works much like a fitness app but instead of tracking your steps, you’re tracking your carbon footprint!

In their own words, “FutureFit provides a snapshot of your impact on the planet, and helps you make positive changes in the way you live to help reduce your personal carbon footprint.”
These positive changes don’t need to be big! They can look like:
- Taking shorter showers
- Having one meat and dairy free day a week
- Changing your lightbulbs to LED at home
- Buying second-hand electronic goods
- Planting a native tree in your garden
Small changes can trigger significant societal shifts and build new norms.
Once you delve deeper into this, you’ll quickly see that reducing your carbon footprint can also reduce your costs.
How does it work?

More than 45,000 people have signed up to FutureFit and, through making small adjustments to their lives, they’ve saved the carbon equivalent of 13,600 car trips from Auckland to Wellington. If 10% of New Zealanders used the tool, we could collectively save the equivalent of 2 million car trips from Auckland to Wellington!
