Restoring Nature
Restoring the natural requires planning, preparation and usually a support team. For many, it’s worth the effort because of the many benefits.
- Connecting with nature is good for our health, for our physical and mental wellbeing.
- Restoring nature means the critters and creatures we love have healthy homes too.
- Natural environments provide what economists call Ecosystems Services like water filtration, flower pollination, soil and sediment retention to name a few.
- Economic benefits if managed sustainably form the basis for food gathering, recreation, and even power generation.
Restoring nature has many benefits, including flood mitigation or drought protection, habitat creation for endangered species as well as absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and helping to reduce climate change. The list of the benefits we gain from nature and native ecology goes on and on.
We cannot truly quantify the economic and financial benefits, but we know they far outweigh the costs.
Northland Regional Council holds information on ways to better manage air, water and land environments and can explain the resource management rules that may apply.
