What Is Our Impact? How We Contribute to Climate Change
Understanding our contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is crucial in tackling our piece of this challenge. A recent report, the Te Tai Tokerau Emissions Inventory 2022/23, provides a regional greenhouse gas audit for Te Taitokerau. This allows us to identify areas for improvement, and to track our progress over time.
What Does the Audit Tell Us?
The audit reveals that Te Taitokerau contributes approximately 4.2 percent of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is about three million tonnes out of an estimated 78.4 million total tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2022.
And the breakdown by some key sectors:
* Agriculture: This sector is the largest contributor to emissions from Te Taitokerau, in line with the national trend. Methane from livestock and nitrous oxide from fertilisers are significant sources.
* Transport: Vehicle emissions are another major contributor in Te Taitokerau, reflecting national trends. However, the specific makeup of transportation (more reliance on private vehicles compared to public transport in some areas) could differ between Te Taitokerau and the national average.
* Energy: While we have growing renewable energy generation, we still rely on fossil fuels (outside of transport) for energy production.
What Does This Mean for Te Taitokerau?
Understanding our regional emissions profile is the first step towards taking action. By comparing ourselves to the national picture, we can identify areas where Te Taitokerau might have a greater or lesser impact. This knowledge allows us to develop targeted strategies to reduce our emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future for our region.
What Can We Do?
While the audit focuses on regional emissions, individual actions matter! Here are some ways you can contribute:
- Reduce your reliance on private vehicles: Consider carpooling, cycling, walking, or using public transport whenever possible.
- Embrace energy efficiency: Switch to energy-efficient appliances, turn off lights when not in use, and explore renewable energy options for your home.
- Support sustainable agriculture: Choose locally sourced produce and products from farms with sustainable practices.
- Spread awareness: Talk to friends, family, and neighbours about the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.

Businesses, Take Up the Challenge!
Businesses have a significant role to play in reducing emissions from Te Taitokerau. Here are some key steps you can take:
- Conduct your own environmental audits and develop emission reduction plans.
- Invest in renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies.
- Support sustainable practices in your supply chain.
- Encourage your employees to adopt eco-friendly habits.
By working together, individuals, businesses, and local authorities can make a significant difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Te Taitokerau.
Let’s embrace a sustainable future for our beautiful region!
