Why is Clean Energy Important?
What Is Clean Energy?
Clean energy refers to the many existing energy sources that do not rely on fossil fuels. In New Zealand these already include wind turbines, solar panels, hydropower, biomass and geothermal energy sources.
Fossil fuels are a natural fuels such as coal, oil or gas that formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. When fossils fuels are burnt to release energy, they also produce greenhouse gases.
Why Is Shifting to Clean Energy Important?
Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) for energy releases greenhouse gases, the primary driver of climate change. Shifting to clean energy sources will significantly reduce these emissions.
What Can Be Done?
The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote cleaner energy production and consumption.
Governments can invest in renewable energy infrastructure, promote energy efficiency, and implement policies that incentivize clean energy adoption. Businesses can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels by switching to renewable energy sources, driving electric vehicles, and conserving energy.
